Pattaya 2011 – Pattaya Town

For a matured tourist destination, it is great to see that Pattaya has managed to retain its small town character. Buildings here are mostly low rise. Though there are now quite a number of taller buildings in the town centre – they are rarely over 15 storeys tall.

Pattaya Town is also quite a pedestrian friendly town. The roads are mostly 2 lane, and there are usually sidewalks for pedestrians. Unlike Bangkok where the sidewalks are often occupied by countless roadside vendors, here they are relatively uncluttered. Traffic is also not as heavy as in the big city. Somehow there is a seaside vibe that you can feel the minute you arrive.

Like most places in Thailand, the Songthaew is the cheapest and most convenient way to get around.

The streets are full of shops selling everything under the sky. Here they are not as obtrusive as in some parts of Bangkok.

Kuala Lumpur 2012 – Chinese New Year Decor at The Pavilion KL

I always look forward to the festive decoration at The Pavilion KL. They do make an effort to impress, and this year they have outdone themselves with the CNY decor.

Royal Selangor has an interesting dragon decor on their facade.

The highlight is the huge dragon in the atrium. This is the biggest dragon I have ever seen, and I am not surprised if it breaks the World Record ! The dragon was made by a Malaysian lion dance sifu and his workshop – well done ! The whole thing was artfully suspended in the atrium making graceful loops in the huge space. It is certainly impressive.

The CNY Bazaar was unfortunately not as impressive as the decor. There were only a few stalls – and really not much to look at.

I also popped in to Suria KLCC and Sungei Wang Plaza to look at their efforts. Both paled in comparison to the Pavilion.

Chinese in the MS Delta

“Chinese came to America in the late nineteenth century in search of the fabled Gam Sahn or Golden Mountain. When they arrived to the alluvial plains of the Mississippi Delta all they found was back-breaking agricultural work. First introduced to the region as indentured servants by planters during Reconstruction, these early Chinese sojourners (mostly from the Guangdong or Canton province) soon became disenchanted with working the fields. They moved off the plantations. Some left to go back home to China, but others stayed and opened small neighborhood grocery stores. Serving as an alternative to plantation commissaries and catering to a predominately African American clientele, the Chinese American grocer was a mainstay in many Delta neighborhoods well into the 20th century.” An oral history recorded by the Southern Foodway Alliance, photos and interviews by Jung Min (Kevin) Kim.

Frieda Quon, who offered an oral history, is from Greenville, MS. My father’s parents immigrated from the Canton Region of China to Greenville, MS in search of the Golden Mountain. Some of Frieda’s story is the story of my family. The difference between Frieda and my father and 3 of his siblings is that my family decided to leave Mississippi and never to return. I was born and raised in the North, and never did my parents ever take me to the South, and never to MS when I was a kid. I am guessing they did not take me to MS and the South because it was a hard life for my father, and he left MS the 1st day he could, and never planned on returning. If we were going on vacation, we were going to Wyoming, Hawaii, and California, etc and there wasn’t time for Greenville, a town that my dad didn’t want to see again. The 1st time I was in the South was the day I moved to Nashville. The 1st time I stepped foot into MS was 5 years ago, and I have yet to visit the Delta. It is not that I don’t want to visit, it is the opportunity has not yet presented itself. Visiting Greenville is on my list of a “must see”. I look forward to finding Frieda, and I think she knows my family. I look forward to finding the corner where my Grandmother’s grocery store was, and seeing where my father was born. I look forward to seeing and knowing where my father’s family first immigrated to in the USA.

Pattaya 2011 – The Sanctuary of Truth

The Sanctuary of Truth is quite a strange tourist attraction. It is neither a palace, nor a temple. It was initiated by a Thai business tycoon in 1981, and scheduled to be completed only by 2025. You need to pay an entrance fee of 500 Baht to visit the attraction. After paying at the entrance gate, you will be taken on horse-drawn carts to the Sanctuary.

Constructed entirely out of teak wood, this is one of the largest timber structures in the world. It is created to represent a fusion of art, philosophy, religion and culture – based on Buddhist and Hindu religious traditions. If you visit the Web Site, you will get some interesting backgounds on the noble purpose of the monument.

The entire structure is constructed out of teak wood – some are amazingly huge slabs of wood which are very hard to come across these days. You can see the craftsman at work on some parts of the building.

Don’t just marvel at the exterior – the interior is also quite impressive.

The scale of the project is no doubt awe-inspiring, and from a distance the ornate sculptures can’t fail to impress. On closer inspection though, you can see that the craftsmanship is no where near the refinement of their ancient counterparts in Ayutthaya or Angkor Wat. Still, it is amazing that they were able to put together such a big group of wood carvers from around the region to work on the project. It is definitely worth a visit.

Sheraton Pattaya is one of the iconic resorts in Pattaya that has remained on top of their game since it opened in 2005. It is still considered one of the best stays in Pattaya and consistently winning awards in travel magazines. The design is a fusion of Oriental and Classical styles – which the designers have blended seamlessly into a pleasing pallete of unique details and architectural expressions.

The resort sits in a large lushly landscaped compound. The rooms are mostly in 2 or 3-storey blocks with open balconies looking onto the Gulf of Siam. Like most Asian resorts, landscape is a large part of the experience and here the gardens are meticulously kept.

Rates are the Sheraton Pattaya are quite high, however if you travel during the low season you may be able to get some bargains.

Pattaya 2011 – Culture on the Beach

As part of the Beach Festival, there was a cultural bazaar at the beachfront. Lots of stalls were set up to display local arts & crafts. There were also cultural displays and live cooking demonstrations. As far as festival bazaars go – this wasn’t one of the best I’ve visited. It was a bit haphazard, and you don’t really know what you are looking at as there was little information or signage. Still it didn’t seem to dampen the spirit of the crowd one bit, as they were out for a great time.

At several locations, stages were set up for live performances and just as places for the crowd to party. And they did !

What is a festival without food ! There were lots of stalls selling all kinds of local delicacies.As I just had a big dinner earlier – I was too full to try anything unfortunately.

Eating in Kuching 2011 – Dinner at Bangkok Thai Restaurant

Bangkok Thai Restaurant was one of the earliest Thai restaurants to open in Kuching. It is still one of the best Thai restaurants in town. This restaurant is part of the Lok Thian Restaurant Group which runs several restaurants in town, and they definitely know what they are doing.

The menu is quite a long one, but they mix up their dishes here and about half of the items are not actually Thai but Chinese. In any case – the popular Thai dishes are all quite well represented.

We ordered our long time favourite – Scallop Rice. This is steamed rice served with braised scallops in a light brown sauce. Very tasty – a bit like a risotto really.

If you like a bit of everything – the Thai Appetizer Sampler is good. It comes with Pandan Chicken, Spicy Fish Cakes, Egg Net Rolls and Crystal Ball Dumplings.

The Tom Yam Soup is always reliable and you can ask them to turn down the heat.

Green Curry Chicken is another long time staple.

The Beef Salad is a bit of a hit or miss. This night the beef was a bit tough – but otherwise the taste is good.

Braised Tofu = more for the kids and definitely not a Thai dish.

If you have a sudden craving for Thai food in Kuching, Bangkok Thai Restaurant is one of the few places that can satisfy that urge. Pricing is moderate.

Cemoro Lawang is a small town at the rim of the Bromo caldera. Its location makes it the most convenient and sought-after base for visiting the Bromo-Tengger-Semeru National Park. As a result, tourism is the major economic activity. However before tourism became a major money-spinner, farming was the main productive activity in this town and the surrounding area. The land around here is extremely fertile, benefiting from the volcanic ash of the few volcanoes in the vicinity. All the farms, which are small family-plots grow vegetables. As is the norm in most farming and rural communities around the world, the people here are super-friendly and hospitable.

Pattaya 2011 – Walking Street

Walking Street is so famous that it gets a mention in most write-ups about Pattaya. It is located at the Southern end of Pattaya Beach. There is a large archway right at the entrance to the street, and though it is right beside the sea once you enter the street you are completely surrounding by shops on both sides and you could be anywhere in Thailand.

The main reason for visiting Walking Street is for the nightlife. If you come during the day, it is quite dead and you might be wondering what the fuss is all about. Besides all the pubs and entertainment outlets, there are also quite a number of seafood restaurants along the street. Some are quite are quite good, and you can dine on the deck right next to the sea. As these places are targeted mainly at tourists, be prepared to pay tourist pricing.

For me Walking Street is overhyped and unless you are going there for the nighlife you can give it a miss.
